So asteroid day is actually a thing. June 30th was chosen because it is the anniversary of the Tunguska asteroid impact, one of the most recent asteroid impacts that was felt and measured.
While the general theme and the UN awareness campaign focus on planetary defense, we've always been fascinated by asteroids as early traces of the creation of the solar system, as well as the potential for resource extraction as a way to help kickstart a space economy.
